 Split Text Tool

Split text instantly in three ways: by a custom delimiter, into equal-sized character chunks, or into a chosen number of equal parts. Each resulting piece can be numbered automatically for easy reference. Perfect for breaking up long text, data, or documents into manageable sections, entirely in your browser.

⚙️ Split options
Type \n for a newline or \t for a tab. Leave empty to split into individual characters.

Split Text Tool

The Split Text Tool breaks long text into smaller, manageable pieces using three different methods: splitting by a custom delimiter, splitting into equal-sized character chunks, or splitting into a fixed number of equal parts. Each resulting piece can be automatically numbered, making it easy to reference individual sections of split text, data, or documents.

⭐ What Does This Tool Do?

  • Splits text by any custom delimiter, including newline and tab characters
  • Splits text into equal-sized character chunks of a length you choose
  • Splits text into a fixed number of equal parts, distributing any remainder evenly
  • Numbers each resulting part for easy reference, with an option to turn numbering off
  • Updates the split result instantly as you type

🔎 The Three Split Modes

1. Split by delimiter: The input is split every time the delimiter text occurs. Type \n for a newline or \t for a tab, or leave the delimiter empty to split into individual characters.

Input: apple,banana,cherry
Delimiter: ,
Output:
1: apple
2: banana
3: cherry

2. Split into equal character chunks: The whole input (including line breaks, treated as one continuous string) is divided into consecutive chunks of exactly N characters each; the final chunk may be shorter.

Input: ABCDEFGHIJ
Chunk size: 4
Output:
1: ABCD

2: EFGH

3: IJ

3. Split into N equal parts: The input is divided into exactly N parts of as-equal-as-possible length. Any remainder characters are distributed one at a time to the first few parts.

Input length: 10 characters
Parts: 3
Part lengths: 4, 3, 3

⚙️ Options Explained

Delimiter: The exact text used to split the input in delimiter mode. Supports \n and \t escape sequences.

Characters per chunk: The fixed chunk size used in the equal character chunks mode.

Number of parts: How many equal parts the text should be divided into in the N-equal-parts mode.

Number the parts: When checked, each output part is prefixed with its 1-based index (e.g. 1: ...).

⭐ Common Use Cases

  • Breaking up long articles: Split large text blocks into equal-sized sections for posting on platforms with character limits
  • Processing CSV or delimited data: Split comma- or tab-separated values into individual numbered items
  • Dividing work evenly: Split a document into N equal parts to distribute proofreading or translation tasks
  • Chunking for APIs: Break text into fixed-size chunks that fit within a character limit for messaging or API requests

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Equal character chunks and N-equal-parts modes treat the entire input as one continuous sequence of characters, including line breaks
  • Unicode-safe character counting is used (via code-point iteration) so multi-byte characters and emoji are not split in half
  • All splitting happens entirely in your browser; no text is uploaded to any server

This tool is also known as

  • split text by delimiter
  • split text into chunks
  • divide text into equal parts
  • text splitter online
  • split string into pieces

Frequently Asked Questions

It breaks your input text into smaller pieces using one of three methods: splitting by a custom delimiter, splitting into equal character chunks, or splitting into a fixed number of equal parts, with optional automatic numbering of each result.

The input is split every time the delimiter text appears. You can type any text as the delimiter, including \n for a newline or \t for a tab. Leaving the delimiter empty splits the text into individual characters.

The entire input, treated as one continuous string including any line breaks, is divided into consecutive chunks of exactly the number of characters you specify. The final chunk may be shorter if the text doesn't divide evenly.

The input is divided into exactly N parts with lengths as equal as possible. If the text length doesn't divide evenly by N, the extra characters are distributed one at a time to the first few parts so no part differs by more than one character from another.

When checked (the default), each resulting part is prefixed with its 1-based index, such as '1: ', '2: ', and so on, making it easy to reference individual pieces. Unchecking it outputs the parts without index labels.

In the 'equal character chunks' and 'N equal parts' modes, a blank line is inserted between each resulting part for readability, since those parts may contain their own internal line breaks.

No. In delimiter mode, each resulting part is simply listed on its own line without extra blank lines in between, since delimiter splitting usually produces many short, simple items.

Yes. Leave the 'Delimiter' field empty while using 'Split by delimiter' mode, and the tool will split your text into one character per line.

Yes. Character-based splitting uses Unicode-safe iteration so multi-byte characters and emoji are counted and split as whole characters rather than being broken apart.

Yes. The delimiter field accepts any text string, such as ' | ' or '::', and the input is split everywhere that exact string occurs.

No. All splitting happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to any server, stored, or shared.

Yes, the Split Text Tool is completely free, with no sign-up, no usage limits, and no watermarks added to your output.
